Hi everyone!
I found a newspaper article from the San Francisco Chronicle the other day. My son helpfully threw it in the garbage this morning in a futile attempt to clean up. My memory of the main idea of the article was that people in today's society are losing their connection to nature. Hunting, fishing, and many other outdoor activities are in decline. The theory is that conservation efforts will be harder to maintain when people are disconnected from the natural world. I wish humans would begin to see themselves as a part of nature, instead of trying to dominate nature all the time. Domination:Boring Symbiosis:Fascinating I sure hope there are enough people in the world who care about the earth and other creatures. I know technology is great, and I am not a technology hater. However, sometimes I think there is a definite downside to technology. It is supposed to make us more connected, and yet I feel people are less connected.... It is supposed to make our lives easier, and yet everything seems more complicated...Oh no!! Now I sound like a crazy woman. I guess that I just want the world to be a pleasant place for animals and animals alike. I almost just said the word Carra said not to say. In conclusion, I am loving this class, and I am greatly enjoying your minds and companionship.

wow, a couple interesting things came up here for me;
1. I used to hate all the piles of newspaper clippings ('clippings' is a wildly inaccurate term, multiple, haphazardly conglomerated stacks of LA times as thick as bibles EVERYWHERE is more accurate, but whose keeping track?) my mom used to accrue weekly and I would secretly throw them away- like jasmine's son. My mother would then try to murder me, as Jasmine undoubtedly did her progeny.
2. When I read the sentence, "a pleasant place for animals and animals alike," and then read the following "I almost just said the word Carra said not to say," I had to look back and ask myself, what word? This was because I read "humans and animals" instead of what jasmine wrote... that's how ingrained the binary is!!!!!
3. It's interesting that the Chronicle picked up on these activities, and linked them to a connection with nature because if you think about- this connection essentially has domination at its root.
Hunting; no elaboration needed. Fishing; same difference for all intent and purposes. Camping; this is the only activity of the three that contains the symbiosis and harmony of homo-sapiens/all other animals that jasmine is talking about- and only in its purest form. Most americans' version of camping equals the local paved, pay-by-the-night camp ground + a case of bud light and some steaks. Either that or the all naturale RV excursion and green house, gassy fun.
True, there are many who enjoy natural, no/low-impact activities like backpacking and rock climbing. But even so, many people do not understand the effect trampling on habitats can have to the animals in those ecosystems (hello.
...off-trail mountain biking???)- nor what something like taking an ATV through a remote desert area can do to top soil.......
so, it seems to me nature is better off with out us in it, at least until we can figure out how coexist peacefully and truly, symbiotically.
ha, ha....... whoa I did not mean to write that much...
