Great Posts!

The postings here are fascinating, and I hope all of you can scroll down a bit and read the conversations that are happening. It seems that we should read something about cloning and genetic modifications soon as there has been a lot of discussion about it both here and in the classroom, and there is a proposal to screen Kubrik's 2001. Some of the topics out on the screen right now: 1) What are the ethics and effects of cloning nonhuman animals for meat?
2) How do media representations (advertising, film) affect "consumer choice" when it comes to deciding whether or not to eat meat? And how do economics (that a Big Mac is less expensive than sustainably grown vegetables from local farms) affect "supply and demand"?
3) What are concrete proposals for ways to change attitudes towards nonhuman animals (and human animals!)?
4) Are Carol Adams arguments about the connections between patriarchy and meat eating relevant in this particular historical moment?
5) How are concepts and representations of "Nature" constructed at different times and for what purposes? What are the material effects of the nature and culture divide? What histories and beliefs and practices does the Western concept of Nature cover over?
6) Are sperm whales really casting votes and writing campaign speeches? What is useful about ideas that nonhuman animals' complex social orders could be a form of politics?
7) Dominica's cat is really cute.
