The Observation

As I don’t have a pet with me and it was too rainy to observe animals outside, I decided to observe Audrey’s… I mean, Audey’s cats. Bruce and Paul are brothers, and are both about 20 months old. Bruce is larger, and white with a few black spots, including a small black mark on his pink nose. Paul is smaller, has lighter blue eyes, large grey/brown spots, and a bright pink nose. They both have pink paws.

As I come into the room, Bruce is sleeping in a soft chair and Paul is sleeping on top of a high cabinet, unreachable, so I will focus on Bruce right now. Bruce is currently sleeping on his stomach, curled up with his head laid over his arm.

When there are sudden sounds or movements, Bruce quickly snaps and turns his head to take a look at what the noise is for a second or so, and then goes back to rest. For very little sounds, he might jerk his head up about an inch before seeming to decide that he doesn’t need a visual I.D. on what’s making the noise, or perhaps his ears just perk for a second. He doesn’t go for more than a few minutes at most without making one of those movements, so his nap is often disturbed. It’s difficult to tell if he can get any deep sleep at all while there are people about. Maybe when everyone’s asleep he can rest more deeply.

Bruce enjoys being petted. He will lick my hand when he can, and keep licking for a while, whereas my own cat who’s saying with my parents now rarely licks my hand and never more than a couple licks before stopping. Bruce keeps his eyes closed as he’s licking my hand. His tongue is rough and doesn’t leave much saliva on my hand.

Someone came in the front door and was greeted, and Bruce jerked his head up to take a look, eyes widened. Then he stretched and shifted to his side. He curled up and buried his head in his stomach for a while, then took his face out from his tummy and put his arm over his face, covering his eyes.

Since they weren’t doing much, Audrey—oh, I mean… Audey brought out some cat treats and shook the bag, at which point both cats immediately went to her. Audey left the cat treats on a coffee table, and both cats got on the table and ate the food. Paul only at this point realized that I was here, so he just moved toward my face and touched his nose to my nose, and then to my forehead, then smelled my hair. While Bruce was still licking the crumbs from the table, Paul took Bruce’s spot on the chair, and started licking himself, raising his leg to get all up in there. After a while, Paul left the chair and Bruce went back to take his spot again. Paul hopped around from a chair to a table to a higher chair, and is now finishing cleaning himself.

Paul then goes to Bruce, and starts licking his face while Bruce lies there. Paul starts digging his teeth into Bruce’s cheek to scratch it. Bruce lifts his arms and wraps them around Paul in an embrace. After a while, Bruce starts biting and licking Paul’s neck, and their licks both grow increasingly aggressive. It looks like they’re passionately making out, having face sex with each other. This goes on for five minutes or so (Audey says that it sometimes goes up to an hour), and then Paul turns around and lies down with his back into Bruce’s face. Bruce just uses Paul’s back as a pillow, and they both sleep very peacefully. It seems to be a deeper, more peaceful sleep than when I first observed Bruce.

With this, the cats seem to say: “All is at peace with the world again; events have come full circle from rest back to rest, as events always do, until our final, deepest rest. Our adventure may not have been a grand adventure, but it was our adventure, and so what if it involved a bit of incest? Who are you to judge, Matt? Who are you do judge?”

THE END

NOTE: For a visual of the kind of relations that Paul and Bruce regularly engage in, check out the video that Audey posted a few posts down.
