just a thought about our discussion from tuesday.

while we were talking about the link between capitalism and the meat industry, a point was made that factory farms, and i suppose the meat industry as a whole, wouldn't exist without a demand for it. while there will always be a demand for food, and that demand will rise with the population, it is important to think about why there is such a high demand, specifically for meat. thinking about the messages we receive about meat, and about food in general, it is clear that we are told to consume more and more food, and that meat is necessary to remain healthy and strong. while these messages come from everywhere, the advertisements put out by corporations who have money to gain from us continuing to eat meat, and more of it, seem to have a strong impact. i guess my point is that yes, something doesn't exist unless there is a demand for it, but when the demand stems from and is increased by influence from the corporations who stand to earn money from this increased demand, it is hard not to see the connection between capitalism, the meat industry, and factory farms.
